Our star ingredient: traditional soap

At Jabones Beltrán we use our own handcrafted soap as the main active ingredient, which means there is no need for fabric softeners and your clothes are left clean, soft and lightly perfumed. What is more our soap naturally cleans and cares for your clothes, as well as protecting garment fabrics and your skin and the environment.

Plant-Based Ingredients

All the other ingredients in our formulas are 100% plant sourced and produced from sustainable non-food standard natural resources. We do not use any petrochemical or animal components, which makes our products suitable for vegans and people with sensitive skins and allergies.

What are ethoxylated ingredients?

Ethoxylation is a process in which synthetically sourced ethylene oxide is added to plant or petrochemical-sourced raw materials in order to make them more effective and compatible with water. It is a type of organic synthesis frequently encountered in surfactants, the principal active agents used in the manufacture of cleaning and cosmetic products.

In conventional detergent formulas, it is commonplace for the majority of the surfactants to be ethoxylated. However, this can also happen with ecological detergents as plant-sourced ingredients typically need to be ethoxylated in order to achieve a greater cleaning potential. A side effect of ethoxylation, is that the compound becomes less biodegradable and has to be accompanied by risk statements and warnings, which means products containing ethoxylated ingredients are not ideal for a “healthy home”.

In accordance with the regulations that each certification entity established for the limits on the use of these compounds can vary ECOCERT, for example, limits the content of ethylene oxide to a maximum of 2% of the total formula. Furthermore, the use of ethoxylated surfactants must not exceed more than 30% of a formula’s surfactants. Other certification bodies, such as Ecolabel, do not place any direct restriction on the use of ethoxylated derivatives.

Our R+D department have managed to develop Biobel formulas based on new and better plant-based ingredients that are 100% naturally sourced, and have an excellent cleaning power, all without needing to be ethoxylated, nor combined with synthetic additives. Thereby, we attain the highest level of sustainability and effectiveness in our cleaning formulas, and what is just as important, this has no impact on the price of Biobel products.

How can you find these ingredients on the label?

In accordance with the Regulation (EC) No 648/2004 of the European Parliament of 31 March 2004 on detergents, all ingredients included on labels must be classified according to the following percentage ranges:

  • < 5%
  • between 5-15%
  • > 30%

Therefore, any ingredient in a formula whose percentage is over 30%, as is the case with our Biobel Oxygen Whitener, whose sole ingredient is sodium percarbonate must be identified as >30% even though its real percentage is 100%.

The failure to declare an ingredient in accordance with the regulations can result in sanctions being imposed on businesses.
